A former group supervisor at Fred C. Nelles School for Boys has been sentenced to six months in county jail for molesting inmates at the school. In November, Anthony L. Berkhalter, 29, pleaded guilty to oral copulation, sodomy and lewd conduct with nine youths at the California Youth Authority correctional facility on Whittier Boulevard.
Berkhalter, who worked at the institution for nearly two years, supervised a dormitory with 40 to 50 wards between the ages of 14 and 18. Whittier police said Berkhalter asked the nine wards for sexual favors and they consented. The acts occurred between June and September, 1985.
