Roman Catholic Archbishop James V. Casey, who presided over a church province of 750,000 Catholics in Colorado and Wyoming, died Friday at age 71.

Officials at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, where Casey had been since March 1, said the church leader died Friday morning of complications from his cardiovascular condition.

Casey was found unconscious in the bathroom of his Denver home on March 1. He was brought to the hospital and underwent brain surgery the following day.

Doctors removed a lemon-sized blood clot from the base of his skull and gave the church leader a 50% chance of survival. Casey never regained consciousness.
