Reagan’s Bid for Contra Aid

On the assumption that Paul Conrad’s cartoons exemplify his thinking, I must take exception to his position (March 7) where his cartoon shows the President crying “wolf!” at the sight of a little dog, the canine representing Nicaragua.

Conrad implies by this that Reagan’s fears over the communist threat posed by the Sandinistas are overblown. The President fears another Cuba, whose attention to fomenting political upheaval in the Western Hemisphere has been diverted to other lands; but in the case of Nicaragua, Reagan believes, and rightly so, that the Soviet influence will engulf Central America and, especially, Mexico, and that we will have here another Soviet bastion for ultimate communization of the entire world. We have only to observe what Cuba has accomplished, to see the threat to us all that the Sandinistas pose.
