Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden, who never has lost at Whiteface Mountain, won the season’s next-to-last World Cup giant slalom ski race at the Lake Placid resort.

Stenmark mastered the 1,295-foot-steep course on the same mountain where he won the 1980 Olympic slalom and giant slalom.

Skiing effortlessly, he posted the fastest time of the first run--1 minute 16.27 seconds--and came back with a 1:24.63 clocking in the second heat, the fifth-fastest time.

His combined time of 2:40.90 ensured his 83rd World Cup triumph by just four-hundredths of a second over 23-year-old Hubert Stolz of Austria.

Stolz picked up 20 points to boost his World Cup point-total lead to 105-92 over Stenmark going into today’s race--the final World Cup giant slalom of the year.
