Chinese President Assails Superpowers
Chinese President Li Xiannian called for world peace Wednesday and condemned superpower rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union.
“The big struggle of the superpowers is a threat to the world and Third World countries suffer from it,” Li said in an address to the Egyptian Parliament. “The world is in dire need for peace, and its establishment must be the concentrated effort of all world countries.”
Li’s speech came during a three-day state visit to Egypt and is part of a concerted Chinese diplomatic drive to increase Peking’s influence in the Middle East.
