Karin Enke of East Germany set women’s world speed skating records for 500 and 3,000 meters, the Soviet Union’s news agency, Tass, reported.
In the 500 meters, Enke was timed in 39.52 seconds, breaking the mark of 39.69 set in 1983 by countrywoman Christa Rothenburger at the same high-altitude rink of Medeo, outside Alma-Ata, capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the 3,000, Enke clocked 4:18.02, shattering the record of 4:20.7, set earlier in the day by another East German, Andrea Schoene.
