Broad Brush fought off a late challenge by Miracle Wood to win the $210,000 first prize in Saturday’s fifth running of the $350,000 Jim Beam Stakes for 3-year-olds at Latonia Race Course.

Broad Brush, the early favorite, completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44 1/5, shy of last year’s race record 1:42 by the 1985 winner, Banner Bob.

Broad Brush, ridden by Vince Bracciale Jr., started on the rail and took the lead in the first turn. Bachelor Beau challenged Broad Brush on the outside and maintained that position into the final turn.

But in the stretch Miracle Wood challenged and whittled away at Broad Brush’s two-length lead to finish second. Bachelor Beau held on for third.

Broad Brush paid $4.20, $3.40 and $3. Miracle Wood paid $9.20 and $5.80. Bachelor Beau paid $4.
