Dana Point : Youth Authority Wards Volunteer for Cleanup

Share

California Youth Authority wards living at the Straight Ahead drug rehabilitation center have volunteered to spend 10 hours a month each to help clean up Dana Point.

The center, on Coast Highway, houses about 25 residents who are wards on early release or parole or who are former parolees. “The director of the youth authority wanted us to get more involved in the community, and this is the project we chose,” facility coordinator Mitch Cherness said. “Part of the community looks real bad. We’ll pick one street a month, and just have at it.”

Cherness said the cleanup crews would pick up “just about anything within reason,” but the center needs trash bags, rakes, shovels and a pickup truck to make the project successful. Donations and cleanup requests can be made by calling Cherness at (714) 831-0360.
