Three Israeli army sergeants-major have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin from Lebanon to Israel, police said Monday.

A statement issued by police said the case involved the transportation of several pounds of heroin across the border for sale in Israel.

Two of the soldiers were arrested while serving in Israel’s self-styled security zone in south Lebanon and the third was arrested in Israel, the statement said.

It added that a Lebanese civilian, who was not identified, was detained. Edna Zigelschiser, spokeswoman for police in northern Israel’s Galilee region, refused to say whether the Lebanese was detained in Israel or Lebanon.
