Southern Methodist University, the nation’s top-ranked team, swept the singles from UC Irvine and beat the Anteaters, 6-0, Thursday in the first round of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Championships at Montgomery, Ala.

At No. 1 singles, SMU’s John Ross defeated Bruce Man Son Hing, 7-5, 6-1, to lead the rout in singles play. No doubles matches were played because the team score had been decided by that point.

UCI (12-5) meets Kentucky in a consolation-round match this morning. SMU (15-1) advances to a winner’s bracket match.
