Arnold O. Beckman, chairman of Beckman Instruments in Fullerton, has won the Southern California chapter of the American Chemical Society’s annual Richard C. Tolman Medal for his accomplishments in chemistry. Among his inventions are the pH meter, which quickly and precisely measures acidity and alkalinity; an ultraviolet wavelength scanning meter which revolutionized chemical analysis, and a tuning device that became essential to radar systems in World War II and later was used in a wide array of business and consumer electronic equipment. The award will be presented at a dinner April 24 at the California Institute of Technology.
