The man who fatally shot Prime Minister Olof Palme last month chose the murder site on a central Stockholm street on an impulse, police said Monday.

Stockholm Police Commissioner Hans Holmer told a news conference that it is clear that the site--earlier described by investigators as ideal because the gunman could flee up a dark alley--was chosen at very short notice because the gunman had only a few minutes warning of the prime minister’s whereabouts.

He refused to say why police had come to this conclusion but added that everything still indicates that the assassination was the work of a professional killer.
