Floods Hit Texas; Snow in Rockies Strands Travelers
Severe thunderstorms rolled across Texas today, sinking a flotilla of boats, forcing evacuations and killing an elderly invalid in floodwaters while residents in the Rockies cleared away up to four feet of snow that paralyzed Denver and stranded thousands of travelers.
In northern Colorado, Interstate 76, closed by snow from Fort Morgan to Denver, was littered with abandoned cars and mired snowplows. The State Patrol overnight rescued more than 200 people, including a stroke victim in an ambulance stranded on the interstate.
The massive spring storm that lashed the Rockies with snow and 70-m.p.h. wind gusts was centered over Kansas and creeping toward the Dakotas, losing intensity as it moved northeast, the National Weather Service said.
