Jury Convicts Pair in Attack on Umpire

Two softball players have been convicted of assaulting an umpire during a brawl at a slow-pitch game last Oct. 31.

A Municipal Court jury Wednesday found Greg Sinsun, 19, guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and found his brother, Benito Sinsun, 20, guilty of battery.

The umpire, Harold N. Smith, 34, of Bellflower, testified during the 4 1/2-day trial that he had been hit repeatedly with baseball bats after he ejected the brothers from the game at Chittick Field. The Sinsuns were playing for Pacific Supply Wrecking Crew against Quinn’s Pub and Grub.

Defense witnesses said Smith charged Greg Sinsun, who denied hitting Smith with a bat, and grabbed him by the throat.

Commissioner George L. Pugsley scheduled sentencing for May 7. Greg Sinsun faces a maximum of one year in jail and a $10,000 fine. Benito Sinsun faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

The Sinsuns, who have been banned for life by the city Recreation Department from playing softball in Long Beach, remain free on $2,000 bail each.
