Logan Throws Hammer 256-3 to Break His Own American Record

Jud Logan of Columbus, Ohio, broke his own American record in the hammer throw Saturday night with a throw of 256 feet 3 inches in the Sun Angel track and field meet at Tempe, Ariz.

Logan set the old record of 254-10 last week in Florida.

Milan Stewart of the Southern California Cheetahs won the 110-meter high hurdles in a wind-aided time of 13.38 seconds. Tennessee’s LaVonna Martin won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 12.95, equaling the seventh best time in U.S. history.

Olympian Danny Harris of Iowa State broke his own stadium record in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a 48.57, and Iowa State’s Nawal El Moutawakel, the Olympic champion, won the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 55.7.

At Austin, Tex., Randy Barnes of Texas A&M; broke his own U.S. freshman record in the shotput with a throw of 69-2 in the Texas Relays. His old mark was 67-7.
