The State : Afghan Rebel Base Shelled
Soviet and Afghan forces bombed and shelled an underground rebel base at Zhawar in eastern Afghanistan in their first major assault this year against supply routes near the Pakistan border, guerrilla sources reported in Islamabad, Pakistan. The attack at Zhawar reportedly began after Soviet and Afghan forces wiped out a smaller base in Kunar province last week, and rebel groups in Pakistan said they were rushing reinforcements across the border. Soviet and Afghan forces last summer tried to capture the base, carved into the side of a deep valley, but were beaten back.
