U.S. to Inspect Italian Wines

WASHINGTON —
The U.S. government, reacting to reports of at least 20 Italian deaths from tainted wine, will turn away shipments of Italian wine that don’t carry certificates guaranteeing no high level of methanol, the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said today.
“Even with the certificate of analysis, ATF will pull representative samples of the wine for testing in ATF laboratories,” said the bureau’s director, Stephen E. Higgins.
