Peter Berndt, the world-class swimmer from East Germany who defected last year and joined the University of Alabama swimming team, has been disciplined and removed from a class for alleged misconduct, school officials at Tuscaloosa, Ala., said.

A statement issued by the university said that Berndt, 21, on two occasions has admitted looking at another student’s test paper in his sophomore English class and has received reprimands. He was removed from the class after being accused of the same behavior a third time.
