Week in Review : MAJOR EVENTS, IMAGES AND PEOPLE IN ORANGE COUNTY NEWS. : CITIES : Border Patrol, Police Pick Up Aliens in Corona
The U.S. Border Patrol pledged to continue the kinds of sweeps for illegal immigrants that netted about 100 suspects last week in Corona.
On Thursday, six teams of Border Patrol agents and police officers rounded up suspected undocumented aliens at work sites and in parks throughout the Riverside County city.
Corona’s city manager, James D. Wheaton, said the city wanted to dispel the image that “Corona is some kind of sanctuary.” Wheaton tied the presence of undocumented workers to the city’s rising crime rate.
According to immigration officials, Corona police requested the sweep “to assist in an area inundated with illegal aliens.”
