The European Command of the U.S. Army has imposed an overnight curfew in five major American military communities in West Germany to improve security against terrorism, officials said Wednesday.

The curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. local time has been established in the Munich, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Heidelberg housing areas.

The curfew orders were first disclosed by Stars and Stripes, the unofficial newspaper for the U.S. armed forces overseas. Army officials at the Army’s European headquarters in Heidelberg refused to confirm or deny the report, saying they could not discuss security matters.

However, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon said such orders had been issued by the European command, but that he could not provide details.
