Costa Rica-Nicaragua Border Clash Reported

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica —
Costa Rican police and Nicaraguan soldiers exchanged gunfire briefly near a border village, but no one was injured and the Nicaraguan soldiers quickly fled, Oscar Vidal, director general of the Civil Guard, said Thursday.
Vidal said the clash occurred Tuesday when a Costan Rican Civil Guard patrol intercepted and engaged Nicaraguan soldiers who were questioning two Nicaraguan civilians who have been residents of Costa Rica for more than 40 years. The Nicaraguan patrol quickly retreated back across the border, Vidal said.
