Louganis Wins One-Meter Dive at U.S. Meet

Double Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis received scores of 9 from all seven judges on his final dive Thursday and placed first in the one-meter competition of the U.S. National Indoor Diving Championships.

Louganis, 26, had a score of 625.05 points in adding to his record total of 36 national titles. Doug Shaffer, the 1986 NCAA champion in the event, came in second for the second consecutive year with 602.07. Mark Bradshaw, the 1985 World Cup silver medalist on springboard, was a distant third at 559.14.

Earlier, Wendy Williams, defending champion Michele Mitchell and Wendy Wyland were the leading qualifiers in the women’s preliminary competition of the platform event.

Williams, 18, a freshman at the University of Miami, placed first with 382.74 points for her eight dives.

Mitchell, 24, an Olympic silver medalist who is seeking her fifth national platform championship and sixth overall, had 378.60. Wyland, the 1982 world champion and an Olympic bronze medalist, finished with 370.02.
