Bartender Admits Stabbing Death of Her Boyfriend
A 30-year-old Arleta woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter Friday for stabbing her boyfriend to death last year in a Panorama City bar after she became jealous because he was talking to other women.
Susan Bumgardner, who was a bartender at the tavern, admitted stabbing Derrall McNulty, 29, during the early morning of Feb. 27 in the Little Vegas bar.
Witnesses said the couple had argued several times in the bar the night before, with Bumgardner leaving each time and then returning, Deputy Dist. Atty. Norman F. Montrose said.
She returned about 2 a.m. and saw McNulty talking to two women, one of whom passed a note to him, the prosecutor said. Bumgardner then took a knife from a sheath attached to her waist, cut up the note and stabbed McNulty, Montrose said.
Prosecutors did not press for a murder conviction because Bumgardner’s attack occurred during “the heat of passion,” Montrose said.
Van Nuys Superior Court Judge James A. Albracht scheduled sentencing for July 7. Bumgardner could be sentenced to as much as seven years in prison.
