Czechoslovakia defeated the United States, 5-2, and the Soviet Union shut out Canada, 4-0, in the World ice hockey tournament at Moscow.

In other games, Sweden beat West Germany, 4-2, and Finland downed Poland, 4-2.

The Soviet victory left the host team, favorite to win the title for an unprecedented 20th time, with a 5-0 record in the preliminary round and an automatic berth in the four-team playoffs for the medals.

Sweden, with eight points, and Finland, with seven, also appear to be certain medal-round contenders. The United States, Canada and possibly Czechoslovakia must compete for the fourth berth.
