Woman Guilty of Perjury in Recanting of Rape Charge Against Stepfather

A woman who charged that her stepfather had raped her, then recanted the accusation, has been found guilty of perjury in her recantation.

Angela Price, 22, will be sentenced May 15. A Fayette Circuit Court jury, which convicted her last week, recommended she serve one year in prison.

Price, 22, of Lexington admitted lying under oath during a March 18 hearing at which her stepfather, James Coffey, sought to have his conviction and sentence set aside.

Coffey pleaded guilty to rape and related charges early last year and was sentenced to two years in prison. He sought to have the charges set aside after Price signed an affidavit recanting her original claims.

Price testified at her trial that she had lied to regain the affection of her mother, who blamed her for Coffey’s imprisonment.

Defense attorney Jennifer Griggs argued that Price did not lie initially and did not send an innocent person to jail.
