In what has been called one of the largest leases for industrial space in the Southland, McDonnell Douglas Corp. has rented about 900,000 square feet of building space in the Watson Industrial Center South in Carson.

The land and construction value is about $37 million; terms of the lease were not disclosed. Lease terms vary from five to seven years for the six buildings in the project bounded by Wilmington Avenue, Avalon and Sepulveda boulevards and 223rd Street, according to a spokesman for Watson Land Co., the developers.

The leased buildings, scheduled for completion in November, will become an integral part of the aircraft manufacturing process, involving quality control and assembly for the Douglas Aircraft division of McDonnell Douglas.

The six-building complex will be the McDonnell Douglas supply center for parts produced for every plane manufactured by the firm’s Long Beach-based Douglas Aircraft unit.

Up to 450 persons will be employed at the new buildings, according to Ted Yarbrough, Douglas director of facilities. The architect is Hill Pinckert Architects Inc., Irvine.
