Mediation resumed Wednesday in an offshore oil industry wage dispute that has paralyzed Norwegian oil and gas production for 18 days and cost the Scandinavian country hundreds of millions of dollars.

State mediator Reidar Webster had initial talks with the two parties Tuesday and decided to make a fresh attempt to solve the dispute, officials said Wednesday.

Despite increased government concern over the loss of oil and gas revenues, it has repeatedly stated it has no intention of intervening through binding arbitration to settle the strike, which reportedly has cost Norway $200 million.

The offshore labor dispute began April 6, when some 670 catering workers on offshore production platforms went on strike for a 28% pay raise to reach wage parity with production workers.
