MOSCOW —
The United States and Czechoslovakia scored clear-cut victories Wednesday in first-round relegation pool action at the World Hockey Championships.
Chris Terreri, a former Providence College goalie who belongs to the New Jersey Devils of the NHL, turned in a shutout for the Americans as they outclassed West Germany, 5-0, and Czechoslovakia, sparked by Jiri Sejba’s two short-handed goals, whipped Poland, 8-1.
Defending champion Czechoslovakia, which missed the four-team medal round for the first time in 30 years, had lost to Poland, 3-1, in the preliminaries.
