Beirut Shelling Kills 9 Civilians

BEIRUT —
Christian and Muslim gunners pounded residential Beirut neighborhoods with heavy artillery, tank and rocket fire today. Police said nine civilians were killed and 65 wounded.
Thousand of residents spent the night huddled in basements and bomb shelters during the heaviest shelling duel in and around the Lebanese capital in recent weeks. Until today’s clash, fighting had dwindled to sporadic sniping or hit-and-run grenade-throwing attacks in Beirut and the central mountains above the capital.
