13 High School Seniors Win Merit Scholarships

Orange County high schools produced 13 of the 162 California second-round winners of National Merit Scholarships, it was announced last week.
The Evanston, Ill.-based National Merit Scholarship Corp. said the Orange County winners were among 1,800 second-round 1986 award winners throughout the nation. The first round of corporately sponsored scholarships was announced April 10; the third and final round will be announced in May.
Winners in the second round were allocated according to each state’s percentage of the total number of high school seniors nationwide. Each winner will get $2,000 for college expenses. A team of college admission officers and secondary school counselors selected the second-round winners from among 13,500 finalists.

Tice, Brea-Olinda High, Brea; Colin Howell, Cypress High; Laura Armstrong, Sunny Hills High, Fullerton; John E. Hewlett II, Fullerton High; David W. Risher, Huntington Beach High; Lara A. Salamacha, Cornelia Connelly School, Anaheim; Laura J. Bertin, University High, Irvine; Richard G. Costello, Mission Viejo High; Kent B. Nordstrom, Los Alamitos High, and Jonathan F. Krause, Marina High, Huntington Beach.
