ROME —
A Rome court today sentenced Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli to one year in prison and fined him $566,000 on charges of breaking foreign exchange regulations.
Zeffirelli, whose films include “Romeo and Juliet,” “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” and “Jesus of Nazareth,” was accused of illegally amassing capital abroad and holding a foreign currency account with a Rome bank between 1982 and 1985. The director’s lawyer, Gianrico Pittaluga, said Zeffirelli will remain free pending appeal.
