Convicted murderer Alton Coleman was sentenced to death Friday for the third time in connection with a 1984 Midwest crime spree.

A Lake County jury last month recommended the death penalty after Coleman was convicted in the July, 1984, murder of 7-year-old Tamika Turks and the brutal assault of her aunt. Judge Richard Maroc imposed the death sentence Friday after a two-hour hearing.

Coleman, 30, and Debra Brown, 23, are accused of killing eight people in their travels from Wisconsin to Kentucky during a seven-week period. Brown’s murder trial in Tamika’s death is scheduled to begin Wednesday.
