Lech Walesa was detained briefly by riot police in Gdansk, Poland, in what the Solidarity leader called an attempt to foil demonstrations marking the anniversary of Poland’s 1791 Polish constitution. Walesa was picked up after he laid flowers at the monument of King Jan Sobieski, victor at the Battle of Vienna against the Turks in 1783.
