Louganis Wins Event, but Soviet Divers Lead

Double Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis won the 3-meter springboard competition Saturday on the first day of a dual diving meet between the United States and the Soviet Union at the Olympic Swimming and Diving Stadium on the USC campus.

Louganis, of Boca Raton, Fla., scored 689.00 points in 11 dives, and European springboard champion Nikolai Drozhin of the Soviet Union finished second with 657.30. Alexandr Gladchenko of the Soviet Union was third with 586.90.

European women’s platform champion Anzhella Stasulevich of the Soviet Union won the women’s 10-meter platform event with 465.25 points. Michelle Mitchell of Scottsdale, Ariz., the 1984 Olympic silver medalist in platform competition, was second with 429.80, and the Soviet Union’s Olga Blinova was third with 424.05.

With one day of competition remaining, the Soviet Union led the United States, 23-21.

The event marked the first dual diving competition between the United States and the Soviet Union since 1979 and was the first appearance by a Soviet diving team since the 1983 FINA World Cup.

Competition will resume today at 2 p.m.
