Dr. David J. Filman and Dr. James M. Hogle, molecular biologists at the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, have been named winners of the 1985 American Assn. for the Advancement of Science-Newcomb Cleveland Prize for work that could relieve suffering in underdeveloped countries.

They will share the $5,000 award, to be presented May 28, in Philadelphia, with Dr. Marie Chow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The award is based on the outstanding article of the year published in Science, the science association’s journal.

Scripps said the research revealed for the first time “in exquisite detail the three-dimensional structure of the polio virus.”

Their work, Scripps said, “provides new insights into how the poliomyelitis and other viruses invade human cells, and may lead to a safer, more effective vaccine against the disease that cripples or kills half a million people each year in underdeveloped countries.”
