Solution to Farm Fight

I am outraged at the pro-Cesar Chavez bias of Harry Bernstein’s column (“UFW, Growers Reverse Tactics on ALRB,” April 30).

Doesn’t Bernstein know that many California growers today are living a hand-to-mouth existence, dependent on federal government welfare checks in the form of subsidies, bailouts and price supports? Doesn’t Bernstein know that Cesar Chavez continues to make unreasonable demands on growers for such silly things as decent wages and safe, sanitary working conditions for farmworkers, who, if they don’t like it here, should go back where they came from?

Really, somebody should tell Bernstein that a lot of California growers today are struggling to make ends meet, not because they’re evil, but only because they’re greedy and stupid, in the very best American tradition.
