Cyclone Namu with winds up to 140 m.p.h. battered the Solomon Islands, causing widespread destruction that left an estimated 35,000 homeless and many others missing. Rescue workers were struggling to reach outlying islands in the 900-mile-long South Pacific chain. “So far, only one death has been confirmed,” a spokesman for the National Disaster Committee said. “But we expect a lot more.”
