Police Oust Students Who Took Over U.S. Building in Korea
At U.S. request, riot police stormed the American Cultural Center in Pusan today to end a brief occupation by armed students who burst into the building shouting “Yankee go home,” officials said.
The U.S. Embassy in Seoul said two South Korean police guards suffered minor injuries in the afternoon incident in Pusan, the country’s second largest city.
“We condemn the violent action of the students in this incident and we are grateful that the incident was resolved without loss of life or serious injury,” an embassy statement said.
According to the embassy, 21 militant students from Seoul, armed with pipes and other objects, occupied the three-story building that houses a U.S. consulate and a U.S. Information Agency office in downtown Pusan and began destroying furniture.
No American and Korean staff members in the building were hurt.
