Hungry Don’t Know Where to Get Aid--Reagan

People who go hungry in America do so because of a lack of knowledge about where to seek aid, President Reagan said today.

“I don’t think there is anyone going hungry in America simply by reason of denial, or lack of ability to feed them. It is by people not knowing where or how to get this help,” Reagan told a group of high school students.

Reagan maintained that the hungry are not aware of the governmental and private aid that is available to them.

“Where there is hunger, you have to determine that that is probably because of a lack of knowledge on the part of the people as to what is available,” Reagan told the group.

The Children’s Defense Fund, a liberal-oriented research group on children’s welfare, said in a report earlier this year that under the Reagan Administration, “federal food programs have been cut dramatically, leaving large numbers of needy persons unserved by these programs or receiving inadequate benefits.”
