Italy Cancels Food Alert Over A-Blast
Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi announced Saturday the end of the state of alert introduced in Italy after the April 26 Soviet nuclear accident at Chernobyl.
“The situation has completely returned to normal. . . . We can return to our old eating habits with a quiet mind,” Craxi said.
The statement from his office came only hours after the government decided to lift its ban on the consumption of fresh milk by pregnant women or children under 10.
Health Minister Costante Degan said Friday he had decided to end the ban, the last health measure introduced on May 2 still in effect, because statistics showed radiation levels in Italy were now too low to be a danger to people.
