Visiting Britain

Greetings from the war zone, or so the press would have you believe. As an American living and working in the United Kingdom for an American firm, I am impressed with the resoluteness of the British and their ability to cope with just about anything that comes along.

However, I think it’s now time for all good Americans to come to the aid of the British. It was the U.S. who put the Brits “under the gun” as it were, with the raid against Libya. Most of the people here now agree that it was “the thing to do”. But they’re having a great deal of difficulty understanding why they should now be punished by the U.S. public for going along with the United States. Tourism is a leading industry here and the English do it well, but now that there is a scare phobia being perpetrated by the U.S. press, a lot of you are just staying home and keeping your head buried in the sand.

London is probably the safest place to be any time. It is certainly safer than New York and most parts of Los Angeles or any other U.S. city for that matter. You can still enjoy a night’s stroll here or ride the “tube” without fear of mugging. The police still do not carry weapons. That in itself should tell you about the “war-like” climate here.

I find it inconceivable that a nation that gave President Reagan a popular mandate to give Kadafi what he’s been asking for, does not now have the courage of their convictions to show Libya or any other terrorists that we stand by those who help.

Perhaps if Rambo were more like John Wayne I wouldn’t have to feel so badly about this subject or write this letter. But maybe there are enough of you who can see that by not canceling your vacations or the opening of new businesses here, that Kadafi has not won a victory without firing anything off but his mouth. Come on America, you’re better than this.
