Mugger Meets His Match in Real Lady, 87
When a 38-year-old member of New York’s army of muggers chose 87-year-old Lady Sarah Tucker of England as his victim, he didn’t know what he was getting into.
Walking down East 66th Street on Monday afternoon, she looked like the ideal prey--small, frail, elderly and expensively dressed, with a handbag over her shoulder.
Jose Ramos bicycled alongside Lady Tucker and grabbed her bag, police said. Lady Tucker responded by reaching for her umbrella and whacking him over the head with it, meanwhile screaming at the top of her lungs.
Her blows unseated the mugger, and as he tried to fend her off and get back on his bicycle, a truck driver rushed to Lady Tucker’s aid and wrestled the mugger to the ground.
Ramos, clutching his head, pushed the pocketbook at the driver saying, “Here it is, it’s over, it’s over.”
“The hell it is,” the driver said.
They fought and Lady Tucker kept yelling until a police officer arrived and took Ramos prisoner.
Ramos was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and criminal possession of stolen property. Lady Tucker refused the police officer’s offer of medical aid but accepted his arm and allowed him to escort her to her home.
