Carew Reportedly Gets Contract Offer

Rod Carew has been offered a contract to play and will make a decision within a few days on whether he’ll return to baseball this season or formally retire, a spokesman for the former Angel player said Friday.

“Rod has received an offer from a major league team,” the spokesman, who asked not to be identified, told the Associated Press. “Money has not been discussed, but the ballclub that contacted him said the objective was to have Carew as a member of the team, and working out contract details would just be a formality.

“Rod said he will make an announcement no later than Monday as to whether he will continue his career or formally retire as an active player.”

Carew, 40, had said on May 12 that he had given up hope of playing again. A few days later, he said he would definitely not play if he hadn’t been offered a contract by June 15.

In St. Paul, Minn., Carew’s attorney, Jerry Simon, confirmed that Carew had received an offer and would decide by Monday.
