BOGOTA, Colombia — Civil defense authorities have successfully tested electrical alarms under Colombia’s killer volcano, the Nevado del Ruiz, to ensure a swift evacuation in case of a new eruption.
A civil defense official said the system functioned properly, but some residents said the alarms could not be heard from every point in the risk area declared after the volcano erupted last November, killing about 23,000 people.
Scientists monitoring the Nevado del Ruiz have reported increased activity inside the still-fuming volcano.
