Free Mass Transit in Geneva: Pink Bicycles

This Swiss city’s first free public transport system was inaugurated over the weekend--with 125 pink bicycles distributed.

Anyone may take one of the unlocked bikes and pedal around Geneva, a city of 150,000 that draws international conferences and some students. The rules are only that bicycle users stay within city limits, keep them unlocked and leave them in an obvious spot for others to use.

A local youth organization, supported by city authorities, opened the campaign. The Youth Assns. Liaison Group will be responsible for maintaining the bikes and, a spokesman said, hopes to increase the number to at least 500.
