The suspended but still defiant leaders of striking Hormel meatpackers in Austin, Minn., have surrendered their offices, and the company said that it plans to resume contract talks with the local’s new trustees. David Larson, Hormel vice president of labor relations, said that he would begin contract talks next week with Joe Hansen, the United Food and Commercial Workers union trustee of Local P-9. Hansen has said a top negotiating objective is eliminating the two-tier wage system that Hormel implemented when it hired non-union replacement workers. Lynn Huston, suspended vice president of Local P-9, said that suspended P-9 leaders turned over their keys to the labor center to the new leaders Wednesday evening.
