High Water on Rhine Holds Up Ship Traffic

Heavy rain and mountain snow falls have pushed water levels on parts of the Rhine River to their highest level for 33 years, causing serious delays to shipping, Swiss port authorities said Thursday.

Albert Vogel, head of the Rhine Shipping Directorate, said that shipping between Basel and the West German port of Mannheim had been halted for over 24 hours and a queue of around 50 vessels had built up.

The high-water level on the Rhine, one of Europe’s busiest waterways, makes it impossible for ships to pass under bridges.
