The people of Uganda, promised a housecleaning by their new government after decades of corruption, were asked Saturday to come forward with their tales of official wrongdoing.

The appeal was made in local newspaper advertisements by a commission appointed by President Yoweri Museveni as part of his new-broom campaign. The four-man commission was appointed last month, but names of members were withheld until it officially began work Saturday so that security arrangements could be made to protect them, a senior government official said.

The commission has been given wide authority to investigate all aspects of civil service corruption ranging from embezzlement and bribery to job appointments and nepotism.
