The Bonn government announced today that an American has been arrested as a suspected spy. Sources said the man is a former U.S. soldier who offered to sell information to the Soviet Bloc.

Interior Minister Friedrich Zimmermann told a news conference that the American is one of 13 suspected spies arrested in West Germany this year. Zimmermann, who was presenting an annual report on espionage, refused to give further details.

Bonn security sources said the suspect offered to provide “highly important” information about American installations but was arrested early this year before he could supply the information.

The man has been released and is living in West Germany while the investigation continues, the sources said. He has not been formally charged.
