Canada Sentences 2 for Seizing Businessman
A U.S. bounty hunter and a bondsman have been sentenced to 21 months in prison for abducting Canadian businessman Sidney Jaffe and spiriting him to Florida in 1981 to face charges of land-sale fraud.
Ontario Supreme Court Justice Frank Callaghan, citing Canadian sovereignty, warned U.S. bounty hunters to stay out of Canada as he sentenced Timm Johnsen, 43, of Orlando, Fla., and bondsman Daniel Kear, 37, of Fairfax, Va.
Johnsen and Kear, convicted by a jury May 28, will serve their terms in protective custody because of their connection to law enforcement. Their attorneys are expected to appeal.
